Welcome to our village
Welcome to St Jean de Ceyrargues, our village located on the hilltop, where we put down our suitcases and decided to set up our guesthouse, where we warmly welcome you to this authentic place.
But what are we doing here and what is there in this village?
Well, quite simply, a village in the heart of the Gard region, in a quiet, countryside setting, located 10km from Vézénobres, beautiful medieval village of character, 18km from Uzès and 18km from Alès. Nîmes, the prefecture of the Gard, is only 30km away. For us, it’s the ideal location, in the heart of the countryside with all the necessary infrastructure just 20/30 minutes from home.
Thanks to this ideal geographical location, Saint Jean de Ceyrargues offers a magnificent view over the Cévennes hills.
I can’t tell you how old the village is. But it seems to have existed for a very long time. It is said to have been built on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa.
We observe the passing of time in the village through its remains and heritage. The town hall building, which dates from 1906, is itself built on the ruins of a medieval castle. The charming little Romanesque church of the village dates from the 13th century. But also, a communal oven, the largest communal bread oven in the Gard, completes this heritage. The villagers relight it every year during the first weekend of June to celebrate the oven, the annual village festival. The ideal time to enjoy delicious breads and pizzas baked in a traditional wood-fired oven.
All around and below St Jean de Ceyrargues, pine forests, wheat fields, apricot trees, vineyards, and olive trees compete for a hilly landscape. Starting from the village, winding paths invite you to take a stroll (see our Topo-balade section). The curious and courageous walker will encounter some wonderful things: here, ancient stone walls and some very well-preserved capitelles. He will be accompanied by the song of a thousand birds, the scent of lavender, wild thyme, and wild mint.
In St Jean de Ceyrargues you can also learn floral art with Nathalie from Parfums et Couleurs, discover the pleasure of wood turning with Freddy, or taste the excellent olive oil from the Baylesse family, not forgetting Thierry’s delicious apricots in June/July.
While waiting to welcome you to Saint Jean de Ceyrargues in our bed & breakfast or holiday home, enjoy this magnificent sunset over the Cévennes seen from the panoramic terrace of L’Autre Maison.
